Psalms 119:22-23 Thou dost rebuke the insolent, accursed ones,
who wander from thy commandments; take away from me their scorn and contempt, for I have kept thy testimonies.
BrainyQuote.com defines insolence as: “pride or haughtiness manifested in contemptuous an overbearing treatment of others…” It defines SCORN as: “extreme and lofty contempt; haughty disregard…”
Yourdictionary.com defines it as: “boldly disrespectful in speech or behavior, impertinent, impudent…”
Contempt of Court means: a willful disregard of the authority of a court of justice or DISOBEDENCE to its lawful orders…
When I knowingly and willfully disobey God; when I ignore His commands; when I ‘blow Him off’ and do my own thing then I am guilty of contempt against God. I am scorning Him. I am acting insolently with haughty arrogance and distain for my Creator and Sustainer, the Lover of my soul.
The Psalmist is praying, ‘Take away from me insolence, scorn and contempt.” Please do not rebuke me as you rebuke the insolent, accursed ones. Their ‘wandering from Thy commandments’ evidences their perilous state. Take all this away from me: haughtiness, arrogance, scorn, contempt, disobedience to You and rebelliousness. Take them all away.
The reason why he could pray this is “I have kept Thy testimonies…”
Father, please remove scorn, contempt and haughtiness that we have towards You. Give us humility and hearts that are soft and compliant towards You. Give us the rightful mindset of being a ‘slave of God’, a ‘slave of obedience’ and a ‘slave of righteousness’ (Rom 6). Please remove the rebellious gene within our flesh and give us more grace to ‘put to death that which is earthly in us’. Give us more grace to obey and keep your testimonies. May we never be counted as those who are scornful, contemptuous and rebellious towards You.
